I'm supposed to be writing, but I'm always drawn into these Nicholas/Amanda discussions . . . I think if the book ever came to be a reality, it would be a definitely love it/hate it kind of thing.
One point to consider, I think, is the reality of foster relationships in the middle ages, and the necessity of nobility marrying nobility. Most kids (boys and girls) were sent off to other castles to foster at the age of 7--the rationale being that someone else could raise your kids better than you could. (which seems kind of silly considering you were probably sent kids by someone else and where exactly did the cycle end?) In my own Artane reality, the boys were sent off (and not at seven--can you imagine!), and the girls remained at home. (Though Anne is the exception, but her situation was different). So if it makes anyone feel any better, Nicholas and Amanda did not grow to maturity living side by side.
Personally, I don't see it as much different than Anne and Robin growing up as foster siblings (though admittedly the parental situation was different there). The reality of marrying someone in their (N & A's) situation is something I still have to give thought to. Honestly, with as much controversy as this generates, I may never get around to this story, or I may see if I package it as part of something bigger so if people loathe it, they'll still have something under the same cover to read that will make them happy and won't feel as if their money has been a total waste.
And for those who want the story, it might actually get told!
I do appreciate the strength of the opinions on this subject. It's quite humbling to think there are readers out there who care about these characters enough to have an opinion!!
